29 May Turning our Trimmings into Treasure
and Helping the Planet!
Here at Out There Trees, nestled right here in Chobham in the heart of Surrey, we’re passionate about trees. That much is probably obvious. We spend our days up in their canopies, ensuring they’re healthy, safe, and looking their best for our lovely clients across Surrey and Berkshire.
But what happens after we’ve finished a bit of pruning, or perhaps had to take down a tree that’s reached the end of its natural life? Well, that’s where things get rather clever, and rather good for our old Mother Earth.
You see those van loads of woodchip and those sturdy logs we carefully bring back to our yard after a job? They don’t just sit there gathering moss (though, admittedly, a bit of moss never hurt anyone!). Instead, they embark on a rather important second life.
Once we’ve got a good collection, ready and waiting, the lorries roll in. These aren’t just any old lorries, mind you. They’re on a mission to whisk away our arisings – that’s our fancy word for the bits and bobs left over from our tree work – to power stations.
Now, you might be thinking, “Power stations? What on earth are they going to do with a load of woodchip and logs?” And that’s where the magic happens. These power stations aren’t burning fossil fuels, the sort that can be a bit of a bother for the environment. Nope, they’re using our wood!
That’s right, our very own woodchip and logs are being used to generate biodiesel. Think about that for a moment. The very trees we’ve cared for are then contributing to a cleaner, greener source of energy. It’s a proper full circle, isn’t it?
So, what’s the big fuss about biodiesel?
- Reduced Carbon Emissions: Burning wood for energy is generally considered to be far more carbon-neutral than burning fossil fuels. The carbon released when the wood is burned is largely offset by the carbon absorbed by the tree as it grew. It’s a much more sustainable cycle.
- Renewable Resource: Unlike oil and gas, trees are a renewable resource. As long as we manage our woodlands responsibly (something we’re rather keen on!), we can continue to benefit from their energy potential.
- Less Reliance on Fossil Fuels: By utilising wood for biodiesel, we’re playing our small part in reducing our collective dependence on those less environmentally friendly sources of energy. Every little bit helps, as they say!
- Local and Sustainable: Our arisings are sourced right here in Surrey and Berkshire, meaning less transportation and a more local approach to energy generation.
We reckon it’s a pretty fantastic system. We get to do what we love – looking after trees – and the by-products of our work go on to have a positive impact on the environment, contributing to a more sustainable future.
So, the next time you see one of our vans out and about remember that we’re not just about trimming branches and felling trees. We’re also committed to doing our bit for the planet, right down to the very last pile of woodchip.
